The Long Home

Resident Testimony

"My name is Jean G. Mower, and I have been a Resident at The Long Home for 14 years. Before coming to live here, I had nothing—no place to call home, nothing that I could call my own. I’ve struggled with a seizure disorder since I was a child and have been rejected and abandoned by my family and my community. When I came to The Long Home, I hated it at first. It was raining that day, and I cried the whole way here from Lititz. But very soon, I came out of my shell and found love and acceptance like I have never had before. No one is ashamed of me here—they take me like I am. I like to be independent, but they don’t make a big deal when I do need help—I like that. I am now on the right medications to control my seizures, and I have real friends here. I have my own room and a bed and a dresser that I can call my own. I can come and go as I please, but I always know that I can come home and that my home will always be there."

A Note From the Administrator

The Long Home is unique to this primarily private-pay industry in that we provide personal care for folks who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Many Personal Care Homes do not accept low-income individuals, because the cost of care is too exorbitant to break even.  Our hope is that with assistance from the community, this home can best use its endowment to subsidize the care of low-income individuals for years to come.  We have made a commitment to our Residents and our community to continue to provide high quality long-term care, regardless of income. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of other elderly Lancaster County residents who currently need personal care, or who will need personal care in the future, but will be unable to afford it. Sadly, many of them will slip through the cracks.  The Long Home is doing its best to offer a solution to the community, by honoring the wishes of our benefactors.
