The Long Home

About Us

The Long Home, originally named The Henry G. Long Asylum, was built in 1905 by the last will and testament of Hon. Judge Henry G. Long and his daughter, Catherine Long.  The Home was originally devised as “a single women’s asylum...in which respectable white women from the City and County of Lancaster, in indigent circumstances above the age of forty-five years, being widows and single women, shall be admitted and maintained.”

Throughout the years since being built, the Home, now legally known as The Long Home, has always maintained a purely charitable mission and today proudly serves its Residents and the community   without discrimination of race, color, religion, ethnic background, or gender.  Residents are admitted     regardless of their ability to pay for daily room and board costs or medical care.

The home is located near F&M College and Lancaster Regional Medical Center and assumes nearly one city block.  Judge Long instructed that the home erected should be plain, yet comfortable, and without any  unnecessary extravagance.  Its grand style with a wrap around porch and large columns attracts the attention and peaks the interest of many people who drive by but are unaware of what is inside.

In addition to providing additional funds for the Home provided for in her father’s will, Catherine also made a presentation to the City of Lancaster of seventy acres of valuable and beautiful farm land and buildings, to establish and maintain a public park, now known as Long’s Park.  The park is known world-wide for the annual Sertoma Chicken BBQ, Art & Craft Festival, and Summer Entertainment Series.
